Mount Agung, the volcano in Bali, is still rumbling. Locals, who live on the mountain and at the base, many of whom were not alive back in 1963 when it last erupted, knew that it was active well before they heard anything from officials. How? Snakes and Monkeys were moving down the mountain. According to scientists, snakes can sense earthquakes at a distance of 120 miles and their unusual behavior can be used to predict and detect.
Just before the major tsunami hit Asian coastlines in 2004, dogs were seen to refuse to leave home and didn’t want to go toward the coast.
At the time of that same tsunami, the Flamingos that are bred at Point Calimere wildlife sanctuary in India, left their normal low lying breeding area and flew to higher areas.
On the island of Sumatra elephants who were giving rides to tourists began trumpeting at about the time the earthquake began even though it was not ‘feelable’ to humans. The owner of the business, Dang Salangam said he’d never heard the elephants crying out like that before. The elephants rebelled against their trainers commands and ran inland and up into the hills.
More than 200,000 people were killed by the magnitude 9 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. If you haven’t seen the movie The Impossible, it gives a powerful and surreal, if distant, experience of that tragedy. One of the notable aspects of it is that many people were completely unaware of anything being ‘off’ until the first massive wave was upon them. After the clean up, very few animals were found dead.
In 373 B.C. according to the Roman historian Aelian, many animals, including snakes, rats, centipedes and weasels came up from underground and hurried out of the city of Helike five days before an earthquake destroyed it.
Alternatively, whereas most animals move away from intensified weather patterns, tiger sharks tend to move toward electrical storms.
Some scientists theorize that the prescient behavior of animals is due to their heightened infrasonic sound pulses generated by earth shifts, and are quick to dismiss the perspective that there is something mystical at work. Elephant communication is 3/4 infrasonic.
Intuitive awareness and your natural psychic abilities
Others point to the animal behavior as coming from a sixth sense. We humans have big brains, and perhaps with the development there in the cranium, we’ve lost other abilities we once had.
More accurate than humans having lost that sixth sense, or intuitive ability , is that in our head-centric advancement, the more ‘animal’ parts of us, especially the beneficial ones, like empathy, have gone dormant.
However we explain the animal behavior, their awareness being different than that of us human animals is evident. Humans have made incredible advances in science and technology, and while clearly there are many benefits, could there also be detriments?
In Joni Mitchell’s classic song from 1967, Both Sides Now, she sings:
Well something’s lost and something’s gained
In living everyday
The heart and the head, the human intellect and the animal wisdom. Neither is good or bad, and both serve purposes. The question might become how do we use one or the other, or maybe both, to ultimately foster what is most important to us.
Tapping into your own natural psychic abilities
Perhaps it’s time for us to look at life from both sides too. The heart and the head, the human intellect and the animal wisdom, which may be how some of us tap into our intuitive abilities. Neither is good or bad, and both serve purposes. The question might become how do we use one or the other, or maybe both, to ultimately foster what is most important to us.
And you, in your life now, how useful might it be to regain some of your own natural psychic abilities or animal sensitivity. The brain serves many functions in life, and yet when we truly tune in, we know (in our bones and intuition) that it’s the heart that leads us to love and fulfillment.
Ram Das, the philosopher, teacher and author, who was formerly Richard Alpert, professor at Harvard, said: “I’ve met some of the smartest people in our time, and some of the wisest. The difference between them is that the wise ones are also happy.”
